Motherwell goal hero Tony Watt says being more selfish will help his team

Motherwell hero Tony Watt says how he plays isn't as important as the goals he scores, so intends to become more selfish in front of goal - and that can only be a nightmare for defenders.

Watt says it can only help the Steelmen stay at the top end of the Premiership table if he does keep rattling them in, and says boss Graham Alexander and coach Keith Lasley have played a major role in his resurgence in front of goal.

The former Celtic and Hearts striker took his tally to five for the season with a vital winner in yesterday's 2-1 win over Ross County at Fir Park, and Watt says he's going to try and keep banging them in as he eyes last season's total of seven.

Watt said: "Getting the winner was brilliant. I'm just trying to get as many goals as possible and help the team.

"Last year I was probably playing better, but not scoring as much.

"I was getting assists and that, but the gaffer challenged me to get more goals, and that's what I'm trying to do.

"I'm trying to do it every day, and we're doing well.

"I need to give Keith Lasley a big shout-out for that, because he's been taking us forward players aside.

"We've been speaking about expected goals and stats, and just trying to do everything we can to get more goals, and it's helping."

Watt added: "That's the kind of goal I'm looking for. I had a header earlier on that was unlucky, and then just to put one under the keeper was big for me, just to hit the target and make sure it goes in.

"That was what I wanted, it's the winner and that's all that counts. In the morning people will open up their paper and that's what matters, not 'how Tony Watt played'.

"That's probably what I need to get in my head a little bit more, and be a bit more selfish.

"We need to try and turn out results and make this place a hard one to come for teams.

"Getting a goal is massive for me, and we just need to continue and try to get as many as possible before the end of the season and beat my record to help the team.

"I need to be selfish, and that helps the team."

Motherwell travel to Tynecastle to take on Hearts next Saturday and Watt says there will be a bit of banter between himself and Jambos striker Liam Boyce ahead of it, with Boyce netting a penalty in a 3-0 win over Livingston.

He revealed: "They're doing well just now. I speak to Liam Boyce quite a lot, and we set each other challenges with goals every week, so I'll probably have a text from him just now!

"I'm sure one of us will text the other, and we just need to keep pushing each other.

"As a team, we'll need to work all week because there were bits and bobs that we will need to improve on, but we fancy ourselves against anybody to give them a challenge."
