Motherwell carer given warning after turning up intoxicated at work

A Glasgow carer has been given a warning put on their record after being intoxicated at work.

Elizabeth Mccusker, a caregiver in Motherwell attended work under the influence of alcohol on October 27 2022 which has led her to receive a 12 month warning on her record.

The carer went to work that day to aid a patient but was unable to fulfil her duties safely. This led to the patient being put at risk of harm due to the Elizabeth Mccusker's circumstances at the time of her working.

The report also details that Elizabeth failed to cooperate with SSSC throughout the investigation and she has failed to demonstrate insight or any regret into her actions.

However, this is an isolated incident for the carer and it is important to note that no actual harm was caused to the patient.

The SSSC report stated, "social service workers should not put themselves or other people at unnecessary risk of harm. You attended work under the influence of alcohol, and you were not fit to carry out your duties safely.

"Alcohol can impair your judgement and decision-making ability. Your behaviour placed service user AA at risk of harm. This behaviour falls below the acceptable standard of care expected of a social service worker and would amount to misconduct."

"After referring to our Decisions Guidance, we decided the appropriate sanction is to place a warning on your registration for a period of twelve months."
