Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson studies St Johnstone ahead of Fir Park clash

Stephen Robinson has done his homework on St Johnstone and hopes that means Motherwell ace their first test of the season.

Robinson says he's watched a lot of Callum Davidson's side in action this term and knows what to expect when they visit Fir Park on Saturday.

The Steelmen are still looking for their first three points of the campaign, and Robinson says they'll need to be on top form to get the win.

"I've watched them, I've watched a lot of their games, watched a lot of their footage," he said. "every member of staff has seen them live.

"They're a good side, they're a disciplined side, and Callum Davidson has them playing some good football.

"They're patient on the ball, they create chances and they have people at the top end of the pitch who can hurt you - Michael O'Halloran, Callum Hendry - and I think they're a real threat.

"We have to be 100 per cent on it, we need a little bit of luck, a little rub of the green, and hopefully we get a little bit of that on Saturday."

Robinson says Motherwell will see a lot of the ball, but must do more with it than they have so far this season.

He said: "I think in large amounts of the game we'll have a lot of possession, and what we do with that is very, very important.

"We're tweaking what we've done slightly, to have more numbers in the box, more crosses into the box, and better movement, and that steely determination not to concede goals, which is key to winning football matches.

"Both six-yard boxes win you football matches, and what you do inside those dictates whether you win or lose - everything else around that is just pretty pictures and patterns, so we're concentrating very much on that.

"It's now a case of putting a run of results together, which we're capable of doing, and then the narratives will change, but it's entirely up to us to change that.

"Winning breeds confidence and I think we've played a lot of good football, but without an end product.

"We have to learn to win games ugly, and when you win games in whatever way, it breeds confidence.

"Getting a lead and keeping a lead for a period of time is what will bring teams out and I then I think our quality will shine through and we can hit teams on the counter, and press high up the pitch.

"Teams aren't allowing us to do that, so you have to figure out different ways and you have to win differently at times.

"If it's a 1-0 scrappy win we have to learn to take that, and then defend your own box like your life depends on it. Once you do that you see the confidence roll.

"People want the ball more, run forward more, there are more shots on goal, and people taking more risks - that comes hand in hand with winning games, it breeds confidence and better performances."

Robinson says Jake Carroll and Charles Dunn are making progress with injuries and Nathan McGinley will be back available for the St Johnstone game, while goalkeeper Scott Fox will undergo an operation next week on a knee injury.
