Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson slams his side after derby defeat

Furious Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson blasted his side after their 1-0 derby defeat at home to Hamilton and claimed they weren't ruthless enough and lacked desire.

Hakeem Odoffin's 86th-minute header was enough to separate the sides and see the points heading back to Hamilton.

Motherwell had more than enough possession but passed up several gilt-edged chances throughout, with Accies keeper Ryan Fulton in particular keeping David Turnbull at bay with several fine stops.

But Robinson says he needs more from his mis-firing stars.

He said: "It was frustrating the whole game. We must have had 70 percent possession – that’s Rangers and Celtic stuff – and I don’t know how many balls across the six yard box.

“All the stats in the world don’t mean anything when you don’t get the result.

“The difference between the teams was the desire to go and score a goal.

“We didn’t show enough desire to finish the game off or defend in our own box.

“We can’t keep saying it’s bad luck, you make your own luck by being brave and we were not brave enough to finish the game off."

Robinson admitted his side look shaken at the fact that they haven't grabbed their first win of the season yet, which is concerning with a Europa League qualifier against Glentoran looming on Thursday.

He said: "It looks like confidence. Look, the subs were poor, and that’s my fault. I made three changes that were positive and we wanted to shake it up as we weren’t getting enough from the boys that were on.

“But we didn’t do that in any shape or form, apart from Tony Watt, who at least ran about. So I have to take the blame for that. I have ultimate responsibility.

“On paper we look like a real threat up front. But paper doesn’t win you football matches.

“They are boys who go in to their shell when they get criticised. We don’t have a magic wand – or a magic cheque book to change the personnel.

“We have a decent squad but people are under-performing.

"You are not going to win football matches if your strikers are not in form, whether you are Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen or Motherwell.

“This was a game we completely dominated yet they had a side who were willing to put bodies on the line. When it came for us to do the same, we didn’t do it.

“I won’t criticise individuals, it’s collective responsibility.

“Is it a concern for Thursday – that’s stating the obvious.

“But it’s been five games. I know some people pull up stats from two years ago to create negative headlines but we’ve not been good enough in the final third in these fives games.

“We’ve not been ruthless enough in the six yard boss. We’ve not been brave enough to take a hit in there.

“The results have not been good enough and I’m not going to hide from that.”
