Motherwell boss says stars will be ready for derby despite cup battle

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander says Greenock Morton taking his side to extra-time and penalties wasn't ideal, as they head into a Lanarkshire derby crunch at Hamilton on Wednesday.

But the former Scotland star says there are worse things they could have to do than play football for two hours, and expects them to have recovered, well before heading across the Clyde.

Alexander's side were held to 0-0 in 90 minutes, and although Stephen O'Donnell netted in the last minute of extra-time, Morton levelled in stoppage time through Markus Fjortoft - ironically a former Hamilton star.

But he said: "The players work hard and they're a fit group of boys.

"We had to use that energy [against Morton], and it wasn't ideal going all the way to extra-time and penalties, but we've got a massive game on Wednesday against Hamilton, which we will have to recover for very quickly.

"They're good pros, they do things right and they'll be ready to train again over the weekend, and prepare for the game on Wednesday.

"Two hours of football... there's a lot harder things out there to do, it's what they're trained to do, so they'll be fine."
