Motherland fans 'gutted' after BAFTA voiceover says series three was BBC sitcom's 'last series'

Hit BBC comedy series Motherland took home its first BAFTA at the 2022 awards ceremony on Sunday. But fans were left shocked and 'gutted' when the voiceover presenter revealed series three had been the show's "last series".

The comedy series, which first aired in 2016, is set in London and follows a group of parents and their everyday challenges and stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, Paul Ready, Lucy Punch, Phillipa Dunne and Tanya Moodie. After the third BBC series was released in 2021, fans have been eager for updates as to whether a fourth series was on the cards and it seems they may now have the answer.

On Sunday, May 8, Motherland won Best Scripted Comedy, after beating fellow nominees Stath Lets Flats, Alma's Not Normal and We Are Lady Parts. But as the cast and crew were heading up onto stage to collect their award, voiceover presenter Tina Daheley announced: "A gold star for Motherland, first airing in 2016, this is Motherland's first ever BAFTA win but sadly it's the last series".

The subtle yet shock announcement was bittersweet for fans, with many pleased about the win but 'sad' the series had apparently ended. Helen Brian added: "Wait. Did the BAFTA commentary just casually announce that there wasn’t going to be anymore Motherland?".

Grace tweeted: "Just found out s3 was the last series of motherland off the bafta voiceover cba". Andy Rosiak said: "Whilst I'm delighted Motherland won, did they really just announce series 3 was the last!!!! What a way to find out".

Liam said: "MOTHERLAND WON THE BAFTA YESSS what… the woman just said last series nahhhh #baftas" and another BAFTA viewer @serindea added: "So glad that motherland won an award! Sad to hear it was the last series #bafta".

Jon Dexter added: "Thrilled #Motherland won the bafta. Gutted it’s not coming back". Amanda posted: "Gutted there isn’t going to be another series".

Show writer Holly Walsh didn't mention in the winner's speech about it being the final series - so there could still be hope for Motherland fans. Last month, fans were quizzing the show's star Anna Maxwell Martin on Instagram as to whether a fourth series was on the cards.

A fan had commented on one of her recent images, asking Anna to like the comment if fans will be getting more Motherland and Anna had liked the comment. So who knows, maybe there is hope for a future fourth series following the BAFTA win - fingers crossed!

You can watch series one and two of Motherland over on Netflix.
