Mother’s Day interiors gifts: stylish indie and statement homewares to buy for design fans

Paper Icelandic poppies cost £25 each

Say thank you to the number-one lady in your life with something stylish for the house.

Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday? Whatever you call the day; call your mum, your grandma, your incredible friend and tell them how wonderful they are.

Better still, send them a gift to make their day and (ideally) buy that gift from an independent brand or small maker.

If you’re choosing something for your own mum and you’re certain she’s bored of scarves and perfume, buy her something lovely for the house. It will be far more appreciated than the baskets full of laundry you used to leave her with.

For keen gardeners, opt for a seriously attractive watering can like Toast’s metal green one, priced £16, that vies for attention with the flowers and looks smart out on display when the neighbours are curtain-twitching.

No one prints photos anymore; it’s about time that changed. Go old-school for your old lady and fill a marbled album from Harris & Jones, £32, with polaroids and meaningful family snaps. Tangible photos are far easier to treasure when they’re not buried deep among the screenshots in your camera roll.

What could be more cheerful than a really charming butter dish? Wrap it with some fancy salted butter, so it’s ready to take pride of place on the breakfast table. Elise Lefebvre has a sweet butter-trinket dish called Botonique beurrier at Couverture & The Garbstore, it costs £39.

Scented candle or decorative candlestick? It’s a gifting conundrum for sure but Loewe’s Cypress Balls candle does both jobs and it cuts a handsome figure on display. Priced £68 from Selfridges.

Green leaves red dessert plate, £35 from Malaika at Pentreath & Hall (Pentreath & Hall)

Bake your mum (or any mum, for that matter) the towering cream cake that she deserves this Sunday and serve it on handmade dessert plates that will almost certainly make it taste better. Malaika has a green leaves red dessert plate for sale for £35 at Pentreath & Hall.

This year, send flowers that won’t wilt by the middle of next week. Handmade paper poppies look great displayed in a bud vase and, although £25 a stem, they’ll last forever. Or at least until next Mother’s Day. Paper poppy, £25 each from Kip Kiosk.

A tortoiseshell teaspoon set costs £36 from Artemis Deco at Glassette if you’re looking for more practical gifts; or you can’t really go wrong with breakfast in bed. This Pegu rattan breakfast tray costs £90 from Kalinko.

Backgammon set, £39 from HAY at Caro Somerset (HAY)

A way to spend more time together, without the expense of days out, is always a good option: HAY at Caro Somerset has a vibrant red and blue backgammon set for sale for £38.
