Mother charged over alleged serious assault of her 3-week-old daughter

The infant is in a critical condition at Queensland Children's Hospital.

Police are investigating the alleged serious assault of a three-week-old baby girl on the Sunshine Coast last month.

Detectives say two women brought the baby into the Sunshine Coast University Hospital on March 22, unconscious and suffering life-threatening injuries.

Due to the severity of her injuries, the infant was then taken to the Queensland Children's Hospital to further undergo medical assessment.

Following a month-long investigation, Sunshine Coast detectives from the Child Protection Investigation Unit have charged the baby's 28-year-old mother with grievous bodily harm.

The Ilkley woman appeared before the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Saturday and was released on bail.

She is due to appear in court again in early July.

The baby remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Police said they have worked out a timeline of events but are calling on the public for assistance to determine the circumstances around the alleged assault.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
