Most popular baby names in 2023 so far as new favourite takes top spot for girls

Any expectant parents out there struggling to pick a name for their little one, take note - the most popular baby names of the year so far have been revealed.

BabyCentre has released its annual mid-year charts offering a glimpse at the most recent naming trends - and there have been quite a few changes over the past few months, with more than a dozen new names each making it into both the boys' list and the girls' list. In fact, last year's most popular girl name, Sophia, has been pushed down into second place - with Lily now taking the crown for 2023 so far.

Lily was last in the top spot this time last year, having knocked Olivia off the number one position for the first time since 2015, but it was pipped to the post by Sophia when the final list for 2022 was published in December. The latest list shows that Olivia is still a popular choice in third place, while Amelia and Freya complete the top five for girls' names, The Mirror reports.

There have been fewer changes over on the boys' list, with the top five names - Muhammad, Noah, Theo, Leo and Oliver - all retaining their places from December. However, further down the list there are some new favourites climbing the ranks, with Arthur having climbed five spots to sixth place while Jude has also jumped an impressive 28 places into the 14th spot.

Parents appear to have been inspired by their favourite TV shows when it comes to naming their new arrivals, with Logan and Roman - names that will be familiar to Succession fans - both making their way into the top 50. Meanwhile, the recent release of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story saw Charlotte leap to 25th place, while Violet went up 19 places to 47 and Penelope was also up 14 places to 60.

Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, said: "As more and more people work in the comfort of their homes and gardens post-pandemic, and away from the bright lights of city office blocks, nature-themed names have blossomed. New parents have also been branching out to tree-inspired names Willow, rooting itself at 14th place, and Hazel, which was a new entry to the top 100 at 72."

Below is the full list of the top 100 names for both boys and girls, and how many places they have moved in the charts since the end of 2022. There are 16 new entries on the boys' list in total for 2023 so far, while the girls' list has welcomed 15 new entries.
