Most Americans Don't Believe Trump Has a Plan To End The War In Iran, Poll Shows

Most Americans believe President Donald Trump doesn't have a clear plan to end the war in Iran, according to a new poll.

Most Americans don't believe that President Trump has a plan for the Iran war or that he will achieve his goals, according to a new poll.

Politico noted that support for the U.S. military action against Iran stands at about 38 percent, a figure that has been virtually unchanged since the start of the war.

The polls results align with broader data showing that support for the Iran war has never been strong.

The Silver Bulletin website, operated by Nate Silver, tracks several polls creating a composite of data to gauge U.S. support for the conflict. As of May 21, the website shows support at 35.5 percent and trending downward. The website noted that support for the war never was high, with the high-water mark being 39.9 percent support on March 30.

The Politico poll also found that most Americans, including a significant portion of self-identified Trump supporters, don't believe the war is in the interest of the country.

"I think the biggest problem is, first, this war was not pre-sold," Michigan-based Republican strategist Jason Roe told the outlet. "[Trump] campaigned against these kinds of policies and these kinds of actions and reversed himself on a dime, and so ... the American people were not conditioned to prepare for this thing."

The war has created global energy problems, disrupting the supply chain as about 20 percent of the world's oil was transported through the Strait of Hormuz before the war began. The critical shipping lane has been blocked since the war began almost three months ago.

For Americans, among the consequences of the conflict has been rapidly rising gas prices. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gas is about $4.54, last year the average price was $3.18.

The Politico poll found that despite Trump's repeated assertions of victory and claims of having destroyed the Iranian military, only 15 percent of people thought he actually had achieved his goals. The poll also found that 40 percent say that the goals never will be achieved or that there at no explicit goals for the operation.
