Morton Fraser invests in new Glasgow hub as results bounce back from Covid

Morton Fraser has invested more than £1m in a new central Glasgow hub, as part of a modernisation programme.

The Scottish law firm also posted record results, paying its highest ever staff bonus pool.

Revenues of £23.9m were reported for the year to April - up 16% on last year. Net profits also rose by more than 40%.

This boosted the bonus pool to £600,000, double the previous year and 30% higher than 2019/20.

The new Glasgow office is designed for collaborative co-working, with a mix of meeting rooms, booths and standing desks.

Chris Harte, chief executive of Morton Fraser, said: “The pandemic reset everybody’s view of work-life balance, so we have responded to that by investing heavily in a place that aids collaboration and mental wellbeing while still providing the facilities needed for the rigours of legal work.”

Key to the firm's growth in the last 12 months has been an increase in transactional services. Both its corporate and property teams saw growth of over 30%, while the private client practice has also doubled in size since 2018.

Harte added: “Most in the service sector will have experienced a post-Covid bounce back, but what matters is how you respond to that improvement.

“For us, the main priority is our people, which is why we have modernised the way we work, so we can give people flexibility to make positive choices.”

Morton Fraser has also hired two Ukrainian lawyers through the Interlaw network, offering them both employment and training in Scotland.

Morton Fraser employs more than 260 people across offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, with links to a further 160 law firms around the world.

The firm represents clients covering the public and private sectors, including the Scottish and UK governments, Diageo, Royal Mail Group, The Ministry of Defence, Transport Scotland, Visit Scotland, Tesco, BAM Properties, Persimmon, Scottish Canal and Schuh.
