Morrisons to launch reusable and sustainable Halloween costumes for kids

Morrisons announced this week it would be launching a fully reusable range of Halloween costumes for kids.

The costumes will be made from 100% responsibly sourced materials as the supermarket are looking to make the spookiest time of year a bit more eco-friendly, after research has shown that most Halloween costumes are made with plastic based materials and then thrown away.

The news comes after reports seasonal outfits produce at least 2,000 tonnes of waste and are made from polluting materials that usually end up in the landfill.

While October 31st is definitely a good time to get some scares, the supermarket is looking to help combat the waste that is produced from the season.

The supermarkets full costume range will now be made from responsibly sourced fabric as well as recycled polyester from plastic bottles.

In a further move to make the costumes more sustainable all the hangers will now be 100% plastic free and replaced with cardboard hangers.

There's also no need for a last minute costume dash next year, as the new collection will be machine washable for the first time in supermarket history. Perfect for when your little one has another party to go to, or if you would like to keep the costume until the next Halloween.

Jodie Glew, Buying Manager at Morrisons, said: “Listening to customers, we know that while they love Halloween and the theatre that comes with dressing up, making the event more sustainable is really important to them. So we’ve worked hard with our team this year to create a range that is not only made using 100% responsibly sourced materials, but can also be machine washed - cutting down on waste and encouraging re-use year after year.”

Morrisons have also said that the safety of their kids costume range is still of high importance.

The supermarket giant is now in their 5th year of working with suppliers and independent test laboratories to exceed both the legally required safety standards, and test beyond the BRC's Code of Practice for the Flammability Safety of Children’s Dress-up across their full costume range.

The Halloween costumes are now available in the majority of Morrisons stores across the UK.
