Morrisons launches food bank parcels to make it easier for shoppers to donate

Morrisons has launched a new product to make it easier for shoppers to help those in need.

The coronavirus pandemic has left many facing financial problems, with some having to ask for help from food banks, reports the Mirror.

To help food banks stay stocked up to assist those who need them, Morrisons has launched pre-packed food parcels that shoppers can pick up and donate at the till.

The Pick Up Packs, which are made up of long-life staples like rice, pasta, cereals and tinned foods, are priced between £1 and £3.

Products are chosen based on requests from local food banks for what they need the most and shoppers can ask for the parcel they buy to be taken there, making the process easy.

Morrisons colleague Michelle Leary from Basingstoke, came up with idea after seeing that customers were finding it hard to decide what to donate. It was trialled in a number of branches with successful results, and will now be rolled out to all stores across the UK.

Rebecca Singleton, community director at Morrisons, said: “The UK’s food banks are a lifeline for the most vulnerable in our communities and these parcels are an easy way to donate to them. At Morrisons, we want to play our full part in feeding the nation and ensure nobody gets left behind.”

The supermarket chain has also partnered up with the Trussell Trust, the organisation working to stop hunger in the UK, to release an online donating mechanism, with the goods going directly to the charity.

Customers can buy a £10 voucher on the Food Boxes section of the company’s website, and these will then be sent to a local food bank of their choice. Morrisons is also donating £10m of its own money to food banks up and down the country.
