More warm weather expected for North East - but warning of thundery showers

The warm weather is expected to stay as parts of the North East could see temperatures reach 20C on Sunday - but thunderstorms could hit the region.

Forecasters are warning there could be thundery, heavy showers but it will remain generally dry and warm across the North East.

The Met Office forecast for Sunday says: “Variable cloud, but generally dry with some sunny spells through the morning, once any early rain has died out.

“A few afternoon showers break out, the odd one heavy, perhaps turning thundery later in the day. Light winds. Maximum temperature 20C.

“Evening showers dying out then a dry night with clear spells developing, although remaining mostly cloudy with some mist and fog affecting the Pennines. Minimum temperature 9C.”

The UK enjoyed balmy weather in the first week of June with days of sizzling temperatures and sunny skies.

Sun-baked Britain was hotter than the South of France on Saturday, with the mercury hitting 23C in some areas and will steadily creep upwards.

Highs of 24C are expected in London on Sunday and highs of 25C predicted for the start of the new working week on Monday.

It comes after one of the wettest May months on record, with weeks of relentless rainfall throughout the month.
