More than 20,000 coronavirus cases recorded in the UK as death toll also rises

More than 20,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the UK in 24 hours.

The death toll has also risen by more than 100.

The government said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 20,890 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

This takes the overall number of cases confirmed to 894,690.

A further 102 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Sunday.

This brings the UK total to 44,998.

Figures also reveal that there are now 743 patients on ventilation and a total of 7,850 in hospital.

All figures are based on Public Health England data published on Monday.

According to the data, the latest R number is estimated at 1.2 to 1.4 with a daily growth rate range of three to six per cent.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies show there have now been 59,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
