Greater Manchester's coronavirus death toll passes harrowing milestone

More than 2,000 people have now died from coronavirus in Greater Manchester's hospitals.

The grim milestone was reached on Saturday when another six deaths were recorded.

It means the region's hospital death toll now stands at 2,005, NHS figures show.

But those figures do not include deaths in the community, such as care homes, so the true number is likely to be far greater.

On Saturday Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust reported another two deaths, while Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust each recorded one more death

The Royal Bolton Hospital has recorded no new deaths for more than a week.

The total number of coronavirus deaths at hospital trusts in Greater Manchester as of Saturday, June 19 is:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 221
  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 9
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 413
  • NHS Nightingale North West - 6
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 525
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 6
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 176
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 204
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 183
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 13
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 249

On Saturday a further 71 people, who tested positive for coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,292, NHS England said.

Patients were aged between 41 and 95 years old. One patient, aged 68, had no known underlying health conditions.

Yesterday the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 42,461 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Thursday, up by 173 from 42,288 the day before.

The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 53,000.
