More than 170 covid deaths in Renfrewshire care homes

More than 170 care home residents in Renfrewshire have now died after contracting Covid-19.

Figures, released on Wednesday, show that a further three care home fatalities have been registered since the start of 2021.

It means the number of people to lose their lives to the virus in the second wave of the pandemic in residential care now stands at 61.

A further 113 care home residents died in the first wave of the pandemic.

The registered deaths come two weeks after all residents in Renfrewshire’s 22 homes received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The programme, which started on December 18 and ended on January 15, saw around 1,000 residents receive either the Pzifer or Oxford AstraZeneca jab.

They will receive the second dose - which increases and prolongs the level of protection against Covid-19 - within the next 10 weeks.

Care home workers have also now been vaccinated in clinics based at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Louisa Jordan in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership said that much still needs to be learned about the transmissibility of the virus after vaccination, but added: “We are making good progress on the covid vaccine rollout in Renfrewshire and are pleased that residents and staff at all Renfrewshire Care Homes have now been offered their first dose of the vaccine.

“Even if they have had the vaccine however, there is a chance that people might still get or spread the virus.

“For this reason, all care homes in the area continue to follow Scottish Government guidance on infection control and adhere to the current level four restrictions.”

It is unknown if any care homes in Renfrewshire are currently dealing with Covid-19 cases.

The Level 4 guidelines means visiting at all homes remains suspended, with only essential or end of life visiting permitted.

Care homes are continuing to use tablets and video calls to help residents keep in touch with their loved ones.
