More GPs are to be trained how to spot signs of domestic violence in a bid to offer earlier help to victims.

Almost 90,000 reports of domestic abuse are made to the Met every year and many murder victims are killed by a partner or ex.

City Hall today announced a £1 million investment to expand training from 10 to 17 London boroughs.

Medina Johnson, chief executive of IRISi, which runs the scheme said: “We train doctors and nurses to be curious and to think about domestic violence when they are speaking with, meeting and consulting with a patient.”

Tower Hamlets GP Kirsten Shirke, who has undergone training, said many women “have experienced extreme levels of controlling behaviour and are fearful and isolated… seeing a GP or other primary care worker may be the only opportunity they have to speak in confidence about their situation”.
