Moonlighting is strong, especially among the young

Is moonlighting becoming the new norm? From bartender to blogger, it's not uncommon for workers to have a side job to earn a little extra money or pursue an area of interest.

According to a new CareerBuilder survey, 29 percent of workers have second jobd, a trend that is especially strong among millennials. Forty-four percent of those ages 2534 and 39 percent of those 1824 work second jobs, compared to 29 percent of those 3544, 22 percent of those 4554 and 19 percent of those age 55 and older.

Moonlighting is more common in the South than any other region in the U.S., at 34 percent. This compares to 29 percent of workers in the West, 27 percent in the Midwest and 23 percent in the Northeast.

Workers of all income levels are taking side gigs. Nearly 1 in 5 workers making more than $75,000 (18 percent) and 12 percent of those making more than $100,000 currently have some other source of income outside of their full time jobs.

Unsurprisingly, employees in relatively low-paid occupations are more likely to take second jobs: 34 percent of those making less than both $50,000 and $35,000 per year.

Leisure/hospitality: 34 percent
