Torching the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game wasn’t enough to get Raheem Mostert a new, more lucrative contract from the San Francisco 49ers.
Mostert, who ran wild for 220 yards and four touchdowns in the 49ers’ 37-20 win over the Packers in January, officially requested a trade out of San Francisco after failing to agree to a restructured deal with the 49ers, per his representation.
Mostert, now 28, set career-highs with 772 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns for the 49ers during the regular season in 2019. He added 336 rushing yards and five touchdowns over three playoff games, including his record-breaking performance that helped send the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
Mostert also ranked third among all running backs in overall rushing grade, per Pro Football Focus.
Mostert’s current contract will pay him a base salary of $2,575,000 in 2020. He is signed through the 2021 season.
Lightning quick, Mostert emerged as a big-play runner for Kyle Shanahan within the 49ers’ highly-regarded run scheme. Shanahan rode him during the NFC title game, giving him 29 carries during the one-sided victory over Mike Pettine and the Packers. He responded with three first-half touchdowns and seven runs of at least 10 yards.
Pettine will hope Mostert is traded out of the NFC and far away from the NFC North.
Mostert’s 220 rushing yards against the Packers were the second-most by a player in a playoff game in NFL history. He is the only player in history to rush for over 200 yards and score at least four touchdowns in a playoff game.
