Monster 7ft 'prehistoric' fish described as 'living fossil' captured in lake

A fisherman caught a massive "prehistoric fish " - heavier than seven toddlers - in a lake over Easter weekend.

Zachary Sutterfield is pictured with the enormous creature he wrangled into his boat on Lake Texoma, Oklahoma.

It weighed a whopping 170lb (12.1 stone) and was 6ft 9in long.

The Oklahoma Game Wardens posted a picture of the giant fish on their Facebook page.

It wrote: "Luckily Nic Sutterfield and Billy Sutterfield were there to help wrangle this big prehistoric fish into the boat.

"Zachary prides himself in being a conservationist. He allowed ODWC (Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation) biologist Richard Snow to come and gather data from the gar for important research. Great fish Zachary!!"

It's unclear how Zachary, Nic and Billy are related.

One Facebook user called it an "awesome catch".

"Wow, scary-looking," wrote another person.

"That’s down right scary," added another.

Back in 2015, a 254lb alligator gar was caught in the Red River in the southern states of the US. It remains the biggest alligator gar on record.

Alligator gars are among the largest freshwater fishes in North America.

The fossil record traces its existence back to the prehistoric period and, as such, gars are referred to as "living fossils".

They have broad snouts and long, sharp teeth.
