Monklands man who threw drugs over prison wall to inmates remanded in custody

A Coatbridge man has been remanded in custody for supplying inmates at HMP Perth with drugs – including diamorphine – by throwing them over the prison wall.

Jack Craig Boyd was taken away to a cell after Sheriff Gillian Wade said she was not prepared to allow him his liberty after he admitted to being concerned in the supply of drugs.

The 20-year-old pled guilty to throwing packages containing a variety of drugs over the walls of the jail three times within the space of six months.

He admitted chucking two wraps into the jail on March 19, 2019, containing around six-and-a-half grams of diamorphine, a Class A drug, said to have a street value of around £300.

Fiscal depute Alistair McDermid informed Perth Sheriff Court last week the amount could fetch as much as £1500 within the prison system.

Boyd, of Woodside Street, also admitted throwing four wraps of cannabis, a Class B drug, into the jail on the same day. The amount was said to have a prison value of around £500.

He further admitted chucking around 400 tablets of etizolam, a drug prescribed for insomnia, into the prison on February 4 or 5, 2019, and around another 200 tablets of the same drug on March 19.

Mr McDermid said the pills were only worth somewhere between 50p and £1 each under normal circumstances but an amount like 400 could fetch up to £1000 in prison.

Finally, Boyd further admitted to throwing around eight grams of estazolam, a drug prescribed for sleeping disorders, over the walls of the jail on July 24.

Defence solicitor Pauline Cullerton told the court Boyd was unemployed and in receipt of state benefits.

Referring to his admission of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug, Sheriff Wade said she could see “no benefit” in letting Boyd walk out of court.

She ordered prison officers to take him into custody and called for background reports to be prepared on him so he can be sentenced later this year.
