Money Saving Expert on clever loophole to save money when booking flights

Travelling with a budget airline is often the cheapest option, but the additional extras can quickly bump up the price.

The cost of luggage, reservations and group seats are just some of the things that are charged on top of the fare.

When travelling with Ryanair, the booking process now gives customers the opportunity to pay for these extras - with priority boarding - when choosing the Regular or Plus fare option.

But the folks at Money Saving Expert have discovered a workaround that can save as much as £100 on return flights.

By choosing the basic no-frills Value fare and then manually adding these extras on top at the end of the booking process, savings ranged from 9% to as much as 59% on the Regular fare option.

The team spot checked across a variety of routes and dates, and found that on average by booking separately the total cost was around 30% cheaper.

In one case they discovered that a family of four could save £99 on return flights from Luton to Bologna by booking a Value fare and manually adding extras – a 59% saving on the Regular fare.

Naturally, the savings vary depending on where you're flying to, the route and the number of people on the booking.

And while the hack works in the majority of cases, it's always important to compare the price of the two options before making the booking.

It's also worth remembering that if you are travelling with kids under 12, they automatically get free reserved seating with Ryanair.

Their family seating policy means that one adult must reserve a seat and up to four children can get reserved seating next to them.  So if you're travelling with children, it almost always pays to add the extras separately.
