Monaghan's Brendan Og Duffy dies in crash just hours after captaining county team to huge win

A teenager killed in a tragic two-car crash overnight has been named locally as Monaghan U20 captain Brendan Og Duffy.

The crash happened on he N2 in Tullybuch, Clontibret at 11:30pm, with emergency services rushing to the scene as the driver was pronounced dead on the scene, the Irish Mirror reports.

Affectionately known as 'Ogie', Duffy captained Monaghan's under-20 footballers to a resounding 3-10 to 1-11 win over Donegal last night in the Ulster semi-final.

As a mark of respect, all underage GAA games in Monaghan today have been cancelled.

Duffy's club, Monaghan Harps, have also suspended all club activities and expressed their sympathies to his family and friends.

Harps tweeted: "Our club is devastated at the news of the untimely death of our senior player and county U-20 captain Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time. All club activity has been postponed until further notice."

It's understood to have been driving from the county's training centre in Cloghan following the game.

No further details have been given about the occupants of the other car involved - but there is not believed to be any other serious injuries.

A garda spokesperson said: "The N2 remains closed at Tullybuck today to allow for Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct an examination of the scene. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing to anyone who was in the Tullybuck, Clontibret area yesterday evening between 11.15pm and midnight to contact them.

"Any road users who were travelling in the area and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
