Moment woman suspected of racking up £3,000 in unpaid train fares over 400 journeys is snared in east London

Footage shows the moment a woman was confronted for racking up a shocking £3,160 on London’s public transport.

Transport for London investigators stopped the woman at Ilford station in east London after she had allegedly dodged fares hundreds of times.

The officials believed she had misused a contactless card to get out of paying for tickets on more than 400 occasions.

Two officials tracked down the woman by cross referencing dates, times and stations where the contactless card was used before catching her on CCTV.

The incident is featured on Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law on Channel 5, which follows investigators as they find and catch those abusing the public transport system.

On the show, the suspected fare dodger can be heard denying the accusation at first.

However, TfL investigator Lisa then tells her: “If you continue to lie to me, it will become a police matter.”

She added: “This has been a long, long investigation and we know that the person we’re after is you.”

It comes after TfL revealed that fare evasion costs an estimated £130 million each year, and it is passengers abiding by the law who have to swallow any price rises needed to plug the shortfalls.

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick raised the issue at the end of May with a viral video stunt, using the moment to attack London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan while claiming nothing is being done to tackle the scourge of fare dodgers.

Last week, video emerged of a man being confronted at Clapham Junction station for fare dodging before being made to pay a fine.

Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law continues on Monday on Channel 5.
