Mohali reports 135 more dengue cases; close fountains, orders DC

MOHALI: Deputy commissioner Isha Kalia has issued orders for closure of all fountains and other water bodies in various parks and gardens amid the outbreak of dengue that left 135 more people ill on Wednesday.

Civil surgeon said Dr Adarshpal Kaur said 248 suspected samples were tested of which 135 were confirmed, taking tally to 1,111 with nine deaths. Primarily, the cases are surfacing from phases 3B1, IV and V from Mohali urban and some colonies in Zirakpur and Derabassi.

Kaur said, “We have an alarming situation at our hands for which anti-dengue drives have already started. But we need full cooperation of residents.”

Kaur said inspection, spray and awareness campaigns by teams of health department for prevention of dengue has been going on.

Earlier, the deputy commissioner said the order to close fountains and drain out the water were issued in the wake of rising dengue cases as larvae breeds in the fresh water and fountains can be one of the major breeding places.

Kalia said, “We have to be active in prevention of dengue larvae breeding. The major source of dengue larvae must be depleted immediately before it germinates into a dengue mosquito. The main source are fresh water bodies like fountains, coolers, money plant pots, bamboo sticks pots, especially flower pots kept in home gardens. Teams have been directed to spread insecticides at all such places.”

She said that Gambusia fish, a predator for mosquito larvae, has already been planted in various water bodies across the district.
