Moga clash: Farmer deadline on withdrawal of FIRs ends

BATHINDA: Upon the expiry of deadline put forth by farmer organisations demanding to withdraw the case registered against farmers during a protest against the Shiromani Akali Dal rally in Moga on September 2, the Moga police on Wednesday assured members of Kirti Kisan Union (KKU) to prepare ground for the cancellation of the case from the court in 10 days.

The rapprochement was ensured after two rounds of the meetings between farmers and the police on Wednesday in Moga and also after getting the consent from 32 farmer organisations of Punjab.

However, the farmer organisations warned that if the needful is not done by the police in 10 days, they will intensify the protest.

Case under charges of attempt to murder along with various other sections of the IPC was registered against 17 persons by name and over 200 unidentified persons after a clash between police and protesting farmers at Moga grain market, where farmers had assembled to protest against SAD and party president Sukhbir Badal. Soon after, the SAD had deferred its ongoing rallies under ‘Gal Punjab Di’ campaign till September 11.

KKU president Nirbhai Singh Dhudike and vice-president Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala said, “Two rounds of meetings were held with SP (investigations) Jagat Preet Singh, who after consulting senior police officers assured us about the steps to be taken by police. We, too, got consent from leaders of 32 farm groups, who were holding a meeting at Singhu border.”

Moga SSP Dhruman H Nimbale said, “Farmers had met the police officials and alleged that those who have been booked were not involved in violence. Police will thoroughly investigate the matter and if those booked are not found guilty, they will be discharged. The police will try to complete the process in 10 days going by the video clips and CCTV footage”.
