I love it when sports games get creative with the cards they release for online modes. And now, MLB The Show 25 is doing just that with its most recent Double Agent drop.
Last year, in MLB The Show 24 — despite some people rolling their eyes at them — I quite liked the Out of Position cards and found them to be fun to play around with. And even though they weren’t anything special on the surface, I also quite enjoyed the Action Figure series just for the card art alone. But what about this Double Agent stuff?
To put it simply, Double Agent is a program being released this afternoon, celebrating players who excelled with more than one team. It also includes what might be the first two-team card I’ve seen in MLB The Show, which also has a fun story behind it.
Double Agent Cards In MLB The Show 25
Here are the players who will be receiving Double Agent cards when they drop this afternoon.
- SP Gaylord Perry (99 OVR) – Cleveland Guardians / San Diego Padres
- CF Jim Edmonds(99 OVR) – Los Angeles Angels / St. Louis Cardinals
- C Danny Jansen(98 OVR) – Toronto Blue Jays / Boston Red Sox
By far, the most interesting card included in the Double Agent Program is that of Danny Jansen. For anyone not familiar with the story, Jansen began the 2024 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. On June 26 of that year, the Jays faced off against division rival Boston Red Sox. The game was delayed due to rain in just the second inning. Unfortunately, the rain never let up and the game was ultimately delayed until August 26.
By the time the game resumed on August 26, Jansen had been traded from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox. And, in the rescheduled game, Jansen started for the Sox behind the dish. With the first two innings counting towards the scorecard, Jansen became the first player in MLB history to have played for both teams in the same game. On the scorecard, Jansen had one at-bat with the Jays, and an additional four with the Sox.
Because of his unusual achievement, Jansen’s card qualifies as both a Blue Jays and a Red Sox card. At a 98 overall, it’s unlikely for him to be entering any lineups over the likes of Ted Simmons or Jorge Posada any time soon. But still, it’s a neat little card with some really fun history behind it.
Other than Jansen, Hall of Fame pitcher and spitball extraordinaire Gaylord Perry gets two cards, commemorating his Cy Young wins with both the Cleveland Guardians and San Diego Padres. Center fielder Jim Edmonds will also be receiving two cards, one for the Los Angeles Angels and the other for the St. Louis Cardinals, after winning Gold Gloves with both teams.
