Mississippi State (3-5) vs. Arkansas (2-6) Game Preview
Why Mississippi State Will Win
And the Arkansas quarterback is … ?
The Hogs are a mess. Nick Starkel went from throwing for a slew of yards early on to having problems just completing passes – at least to other Arkansas players – at times. John Stephen Jones is a bit of a baller – he wasn’t bad against Alabama – and Ben Hicks is trying to get healthy.
No matter who’s under center, the passing game isn’t consistent enough and the offense isn’t working well enough to keep up if Mississippi State can get up early. That’s where the turnover margin comes in. The Bulldogs are great at taking the ball away, and the Hogs are great at giving it up.
Offensively, MSU freshman QB Garrett Shrader has shown the promise and potential to build around. He might not be the most consistent passer yet, but even though he was off against Texas A&M, he threw three touchdown passes and had his sixth-straight games with 60 rushing yards or more. But …

Why Arkansas Will Win
Mississippi State doesn’t do much on third downs and generally has a hard time putting points on the board. It was good at keeping things moving against Texas A&M, but the 30 points were the most scored since hanging up 38 on Southern Miss in early September.
This isn’t a Bulldog team that’s going to run away and hide. Arkansas needs games to be kept low-scoring and can’t keep up in a back-and-forth firefight, and this won’t be that.
For all of the problems the Arkansas offense is having overall, the line hasn’t been too bad. It’s not generating enough for the running game, but it’s okay in pass protection and MSU doesn’t have any sort of a pass rush. The Hog backfield will have plenty of time to operate.

What’s Going To Happen
Mississippi State already lost on the road at Tennessee. Is the program really so down to drop a game at Arkansas?
The Bulldog offense won’t go off, but it’ll be just effective enough to control the clock and the tempo. Arkansas isn’t big on owning the time of possession battle, and that’ll matter. Mississippi State will have the ball for around 35 minutes, the Hogs will have to press, and overall, it won’t be pretty. It’ll be close, but it’ll be a grind for both sides.
