Missing toddler Katrice Lee: Police make Swindon arrest over girl who vanished on second birthday

Military police have arrested a suspect over the disappearance of Katrice Lee - 38 years after the North East toddler vanished.

Hartlepool's Katrice was celebrating her second birthday in 1981 when she suddenly dissapeared.

It was feared she was snatched from a shop at the German barracks where her dad, Richard Lee, was stationed.

She had been shopping for birthday treats with her mum Sharon at the supermarket in Paderborn.

Now, military police have detained a suspect in Swindon, while police have been digging up a patio at a property in the town.

However, it has been widely reported that specific details of the suspect won't be made public at this stage.

It comes a year after a river bank was searched as part of the investigation into her disapearance.

Over 100 soldiers were brought in to assist with the five-week search. Nothing was found.

The renewed activity comes after Royal Military Police chiefs admitted in 2012 that mistakes had been made in the investigation to find her.

It sparked the Government to relaunch the case.

Her parents have both previously stated they believed Katrice had been kidnapped on that infamous day.

And addressing the failings in the case, Mr Lee previously told the BBC: "I believe what we should now be looking at a public inquiry into the treatment of the family through all of this and the way in which the case has been handled.

"If things had been done properly in 1981 we wouldn't still be going through this now."
