Minnesota (2-0) vs. Georgia Southern (1-1) Game Preview
Why Georgia Southern Will Win
Now there’s the running game.
LSU is pretty good at the whole defense thing, and it showed it by shutting down the Georgia Southern option attack in the opener. But last week against Maine, the Eagles got their groove back with 395 yards on the ground and three 100-yard rushers.
This isn’t Army when it comes to running the O, but it’s still great at controlling the clock for stretches and when it’s on, it’s maddening to keep in check.
The Gophers have been in two straight fights against teams outside of the Power Five – South Dakota State and Fresno State – and now they have to prove they can come up with a consistent offense to keep the Eagle offense on the sidelines. So far, Minnesota hasn’t cranked up the production until it has absolutely had to.
Why Minnesota Will Win
Georgia Southern isn’t controlling things like it should.
Part of the reason is the injury to starting quarterback Shai Werts, who didn’t play against Maine but might be able to go this week, and part of the reason is an offense that’s struggling to put points on the board.
So far, the Eagle secondary has been the biggest issue, and Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan is playing well. The starting quarterback has missed a few layups, but for the most part he’s balance out a disappointing running game.
Teams are daring him to produce, and the passing game is coming through. However, when it’s time to get the job done late in the first two games, the Minnesota offensive line has taken over. It would be nice to do that for a full 60 minutes, but again, Morgan has proven he can produce if needed.

What’s Going To Happen
Minnesota is overdue for a strong, easy performance. The coaching staff proved it could figure out the option attack when it took down Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl at the end of last season. However, it’ll be the Gopher offense that takes over with the best game yet from the running game that has yet to get going.
