Milwaukee Brewers Face Pitching Challenges After Re-Signing Brandon Woodruff

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff has signed a contract extension with the team, securing his presence through at least 2025. The deal includes a $2.5 million salary for this season, $5 million for the next, and a mutual option for a $20 million salary in 2026 with a $10 million buyout. Woodruff, a two-time All-Star, underwent shoulder surgery last season and is not expected to pitch in 2024.

Woodruff has been a standout performer for the Brewers, boasting a career ERA of 3.10 over seven seasons. In 2023, he posted an impressive 2.28 ERA and 0.82 WHIP over 11 starts. Despite his injury setback, the Brewers are optimistic about his future contributions to the team.

However, the Brewers face pitching challenges in the upcoming season. The departure of Corbin Burnes, their reliable pitcher with a 3.39 ERA and 200 strikeouts in 2023, has left a void in their rotation. Freddy Peralta, who struck out 210 batters in 165 2/3 innings last season, now leads the pitching staff.

Wade Miley, Colin Rea, Jakob Junis, and Joe Ross are among the pitchers the Brewers are counting on to fill the gaps. Miley, with a 3.14 ERA in 2023, brings experience but faces age-related concerns. Junis, a recent acquisition, will transition back to a starting role after excelling in relief last season.

The Brewers will also look to younger pitchers like DL Hall, acquired in the Burnes trade, and Robert Gasser, who showed promise in Triple-A. Jacob Misiorowski, a top pitching prospect, presents potential but may not join the team until 2025.

Despite the challenges, the Brewers remain committed to building a competitive pitching staff for the future. Woodruff's extension signifies their investment in long-term success, while the upcoming season will test the depth and resilience of their pitching rotation.
