A Hamilton group who make quilts for vulnerable children across the west of Scotland have distributed their 18,000th cover.
The Lanarkshire Linus Group provides homemade quilts, blankets and incubator covers to children across the county and the wider Glasgow who are sick, bereaved or traumatised.
The group of 20 to 30 volunteers also help youngsters in hospitals and hospices as well as via social workers, health visitors, school nurses and Women’s Aid.
Across Lanarkshire alone they donate more than 100 items every month – building numbers up gradually since their first delivery to Wishaw General in August 2004 when Elspeth Russell, the voluntary co-ordinator for Project Linus UK in Lanarkshire & Glasgow East, made her first delivery of quilts - four wee neo-natal ones to Wishaw General.
Eighteen years later, Elspeth delivered her 18,000th quilt from the group - a full size (120cm x 150 cms) quilt to Foster Care Associates in Cambuslang for a youngster in their care.
Elspeth said: "Our volunteers provide all their own materials and, although we never think about monetary value, if you average about 20 pounds per quilt, we have provided 360,000 pounds in value over the years - a remarkable achievement."
