Milan prisoners craft instruments from migrant boat scraps

Milan's opera prison inmates making classical instruments from migrant boats.

In Milan, Italy, a unique initiative is taking place at the city's opera prison, where inmates are utilizing their woodworking skills to transform scraps from abandoned migrant boats into exquisite classical instruments. These boats, which once carried migrants seeking refuge across the treacherous Mediterranean Sea, are often left to deteriorate in a scrapyard after reaching Italy's Lampedusa Island.

An Italian foundation known as House of the Spirits and the Arts has found a way to repurpose these abandoned boats, providing both a sustainable solution for recycling the wood and an opportunity to teach valuable trade skills to local prisoners. For many of the inmates involved in the project, the work goes beyond just a task – it offers newfound purpose and a sense of redemption. One prisoner, identified as Andrea, serving a life sentence, sees the craftsmanship as a means of personal transformation, stating that it has led to a sense of rediscovery and a feeling of being reborn.

The prisoners, as they carefully select and salvage wood from the discarded boats, are confronted with a poignant reality of the journeys taken by the migrants and the challenging circumstances they face. This initiative also brings attention to the ongoing migrant crisis, with over 150,000 migrants arriving in Italy via the Mediterranean Sea in 2023, as reported by the UN. The act of repurposing the wood, which was previously considered special waste, serves as a symbolic gesture of valuing the lives of migrants who embark on perilous journeys in search of safety and opportunity.

Upon completing their work, the inmates have the opportunity to witness the fruits of their labor in a unique way. Their violins of the sea come to life in a concert held at the prestigious La Scala Theatre, where the Orchestra of the Sea debuts their creations. This experience not only highlights the craftsmanship and dedication of the inmates but also underscores the impact individuals can make despite facing adversity. The prisoners involved in this initiative express a sense of unity and purpose, emphasizing that they are on a transformative journey together within the confines of the prison walls.
