Mikel Arteta's 'priority' midfield target revealed as Arsenal striker close to exit

Arsenal are preparing for a busy summer transfer window as Edu aims to bolster Mikel Arteta's squad ahead of the new season. While the Gunners did impress in the previous campaign, they could not finish in a Champions League spot as they narrowly missed out to north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

It means they will have to settle for a return to the Europa League, adding extra fixtures to their schedule that wasn't a problem before. That said, Arteta will likely be relishing a return to continental football after a spell without it.

The challenge next season will be to go one further and confirm a place in the Champions League, all while being competitive in cup competitions. Plenty of exciting players have been linked with a move, and with that in mind, football.london takes a look at the latest news and transfer rumours.

Cody Gakpo

According to Caught Offside, PSV attacker Cody Gakpo has been offered to Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea. The explosive wide-attacker, who has four years left on his deal, has become a candidate to play in the Premier League next season.

Alexandre Lacazette

As per L'equipe, as cited by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Lyon are closing in on a move for Lacazette. He said: "OL are now closing on Alexandre Lacazette, free transfer set to be completed as per @lequipe. Arsenal have been informed by Lacazette about OL proposal this week.

"We'll do our best to sign him", [Jean-Michel] Aulas said in February.

Youri Tielemans

According to Romano, Tielemans is Arsenal's primary midfield target. Meanwhile, Ruben Neves and Arthur Melo continue to be admired.

He wrote in his Caught Offside column: "Arsenal are taking their time in choosing the new midfielder.

"Ruben Neves and Arthur Melo have been two names on the list for some time, two very popular players in the club; the priority as of now goes to Youri Tielemans."
