Mikel Arteta hails 'incredible' response from Arsenal star after horror mistake

Mikel Arteta paid tribute to Gabriel's "remarkable" response to his early error in Arsenal's 3-2 win over Bournemouth.

The Brazilian played a dreadful pass across his own box under no pressure straight to Evanilson, who must not have been able to believe his luck when finishing past the scrambling David Raya.

Within six minutes, though, Gabriel had levelled things up himself, firing in a finish when the ball fell to him at the back post.

He was also rock solid defensively after his error, with the centre-back typically brave in throwing his body in the way and getting his head to dangerous crosses.

Declan Rice's second-half brace kicked Arsenal on into a position of strength, one they held onto despite Junior Kroupi's superb strike, and it ensured Gabriel's moment to forget did not prove costly.

"I really love today the next step of the team in terms of individual personality and presence," Arteta said.

"I think what Gabi Magalhaes has done after making a big mistake to concede the goal, the way he reacted to that, the way he played afterwards, the way he transmitted energy after that, it was remarkable.

"It's part of football and it's about how you react to the next action. You need to have a very short memory to be at the very top constantly. With a positive action it happens the same because there's another one that is the most important one.

"But today, especially when you concede a goal after that, it's really tough to do it mentally, especially with what is at stake in every game. So I'm very, very impressed with what he's done."

Arteta was also full of praise for Rice, who had been a doubt for the match after missing the midweek win over Aston Villa due to swelling on his knee.

The Arsenal boss was unsure whether he would have Rice available here in the build-up to the match, but the midfielder managed to play the full 90 minutes.

"Every hour for him was important to be able to be available today," Arteta said.

"We didn't know for how long, so in the manner that he competed, played and on top of that scored two goals, I think it was outstanding and a really big message for the team."

Rice was at the double in the second half, producing a lovely low finish on the run to put Arsenal in front before then getting his second when converting Bukayo Saka's cut-back.

Asked after the match if Rice was one of the best midfielders in the world, Arteta responded: "Yes, for me yes. The ones that we have are the best.

"Declan is constantly adding things to his game, he's constantly adding things to his role in the team. I don't see where he can stop because he can still improve in a lot of areas and he wants to improve. He's such a pivotal player for us."
