Mikel Arteta dealt boost in bid to complete quick-fire Arsenal double transfer

Arsenal's attempts to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale have had another boost.

The Gunners have been involved in a summer-long chase for the Sheffield United stopper. Arsenal chief Mikel Arteta wants another 'keeper to compete with Bernd Leno.

Ramsdale is his number one target but so far the London side have been frustrated by United's insistence that a fee of £30million is paid.

Arsenal were said to be unwilling to go that far for a player who is plying his trade in the Championship after United's relegation last term.

Now, our colleagues at football.london say that the Blades are willing to accept a much lower fee of £20m.

It has emerged over the past few days that Ramsdale is keen for the move to go through. His current manager Slavisa Jokanovic told reporters yesterday: "(It's) natural he wants to be a Premier League player.

"I am talking with him, he believes it can be a good move for himself but it is not a bad thing for him if he stays with us."

Ramsdale, 23, has started both the Blades' league games this season.

However, the flurry of off-the-field headlines means his selection for tonight's trip to West Bromwich Albion is surely in doubt.

If Ramsdale does indeed arrive at the Emirates, he is expected to become their specialist cup goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, the Ramsdale deal could be completed around the same time as Arteta ties up another protracted signing in Martin Odegaard.

The 22-year-old joined Arsenal in January on loan until the end of the season, scoring once and assisting two in 14 league appearances.

He is now set for a return to the Emirates with a fee of around £30million being discussed. His return, and the arrival of Ramsdale, would give the Gunners a much-needed boost after a poor start to their Premier League campaign saw them lose 2-0 to newly-promoted Brentford.

Arsenal are not in European competition this season for the first time in more than 25 years and will be targeting a vast improvement on last season's eighth-placed finish.
