Mike Pence has gone viral after he was filmed energetically running up the staircase of Air Force Two before suddenly tripping over.

The US Vice President was attempting to board the plane that would take him to Wisconsin for a roundtable discussion on schools with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

He had almost reached the top of the stairs when he stumbled and had to put his arms out to catch himself from falling.

Mr Pence quickly recovered and was seen giving the thumbs up and waving to the crowd before entering the plane.

People took to social media to mock the 61-year-old's stumble after footage of it went viral.

One person said on Twitter: "Anyone think Trump told Pence to take a dive on those stairs today, to take the heat off Trump over his inability to walk down a ramp?"

Jackie wrote on social media: "He was probably too in his head saying 'don’t trip' and then wham, down he went.

"I hope he got a round of applause by those in the plane. I’m sure they were smothering their laughter."

Another joked: "He needs gait conversion therapy".

Some referenced another plane fiasco when US President Donald Trump unknowingly had a piece to toilet paper stuck to his shoe as he walked up the staircase of Air Force One in October 2018.

Mr Trump was on his way to a Make America Great Again rally in Minnesota when the apparent blunder happened.

Concerns were raised about the health of Mr Trump after he appeared to show difficulty when walking down a ramp at a ceremony for newly qualified cadets on Saturday in New York.

Mr Trump hit back at critics saying the ramp was "very steep" and "slippery".

The 74-year-old President was the oldest person ever to win a US election, despite mocking his opponents Hillary Clinton and the Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for showing signs of frailty.
