Mike LaFleur confirms Sean McVay will still call Rams’ offensive plays

Sean McVay hired Mike LaFleur as his new offensive coordinator this offseason, replacing Liam Coen in that role. The scheme could change a little bit with LaFleur on the staff, but one thing won’t be any different: the offensive play caller.

It was believed that McVay would still call the plays on offense, but since he hasn’t spoken to the media since hiring LaFleur, their plan wasn’t completely clear. In a recent interview on the “Rams Revealed podcast, LaFleur confirmed McVay will remain the play caller.

“Sean’s still going to call the plays, yes?” J.B. Long asked.

“Yes,” LaFleur replied.

Long asked LaFleur if he’s “good with that,” to which he responded by saying he looks forward to calling plays again down the line, but his primary goal right now is to win games.

“When I thought about kind of what I want next after the Jets, it was my list that I professionally did in my head and this one checked all the boxes immediately,” LaFleur said. “That’s something that I learned through over the last two years. Look forward to doing it again, but right now, going into this next season, it’s about winning football games.”

McVay’s coordinators have always been on the sidelines as opposed to sitting in a booth upstairs, but LaFleur isn’t entirely sure where he’ll be on game days next season.

“We’re working through those things right now and we’ll figure that out,” he said.

LaFleur called the Jets’ plays for the last two years, his first time doing that in the NFL. When he was with the 49ers, he was the pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach, so it was Kyle Shanahan calling the plays.

LaFleur could have a head coaching job in his future if he follows in the footsteps of both his brother Matt LaFleur and Kevin O’Connell, who both became head coaches after being McVay’s offensive coordinators. Zac Taylor also became a head coach after working as the Rams’ QBs coach under McVay.
