Miguel Azeez still has Arsenal future as Wigan loan move reunites midfielder with former mentor

Miguel Azeez has joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season. football.london understands it is simply a dry loan and therefore the player’s Arsenal future remains a possibility.

Kolo Toure is the current head coach of Wigan and has his own history and links to the Gunners. However, Miguel Azeez, who was recalled from his loan spell in Spain with UD Ibiza after struggling to establish himself in the team, was drawn to the side by another former Arsenal member.

Wigan assistant coach Kevin Betsy coached Azeez when he was the Arsenal U23 coach. Betsy left the club in 2022 to become Crawley Town’s head coach but departed after just five months.

football.london understands that Betsy has played a role in the signing of Azeez for Wigan. His familiarity with the player has clearly convinced those at the Championship side to take a chance on the midfielder.

In an exclusive interview with football.london, Azeez said that Betsy had been key in allowing him to enjoy his football.

"I feel like it’s important to play different positions, so you understand what other players need from you when you back into that position," the Hale Ender says. "I feel like under Kevin as manager he gives me freedom, so I enjoy playing under him."

Azeez spent time with Portsmouth last season before again being recalled in the winter. He remained with the Arsenal youth team, however.

Azeez said that he wanted a whole season at the senior level. Therefore it is perhaps unsurprising to see him head out again so swiftly.

"I want to play the full season in men’s football, wherever that is," he stated. "Whether that’s here, or someone else, it is what it is, but that’s the main goal for me."
