Midlothian firefighters race to ongoing 'gorse' blaze near housing estate

Multiple fire engines have been spotted tackling a blaze close to a Midlothian housing estate - with smoke pictured billowing into the sky.

Residents in Bonnyrigg reported seeing smoke as far as a mile away from their homes as ash has also been pictured flying in the air. The fire, which appears to have originated in a field, around the Bannockrigg area, has triggered an urgent response, with two fire crews pictured at the scene.

One eye witness at the scene reported seeing a similar gorse fire at the opposite end of the estate, before noticing the second blaze from a mile away with huge clouds of smoke billowing into the air.

They said that fire crews have recently arrived at the scene where dozens of residents have gathered outside, as firefighters began extinguishing the blaze.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they are in attendance, but could not confirm any more information at this time.

Another eye witness said: "We were out on a walk and noticed a lot of smoke coming from the field which seemed to die down, but then on the way back we noticed a more severe fire about half a mile away, within the same field.

"We could smell the smoke and could see ash in the air. Fire crews arrived pretty quickly, there are currently two on scene, and firefighters have started to extinguish the blaze as we can't hear the fire crackling any more. It looks like they are preparing to get closer and make sure if it completely safe."
