Microsoft is discussing pushing its clean energy targets due to current and future AI usage, according to a new report.
Bloomberg detailed that the company is weighing to push back or even completely abandon its goal to offset all of its energy consumption with renewable purchases by 2030.
The outlet went on to detail that building data centers, which has proven to be costly and demand high levels of energy consumption, are impacting the company's assessments about whether achieving the goal will be feasible.
A company spokesperson told the outlet that the company is still looking for opportunities to offset its costs. Conversations about the matter are reportedly ongoing and no final decision has been made.
Microsoft announced its goal in 2021. The company, however, said it increased its carbon emissions increased by 23% in its latest sustainability report. The company pointed at "factors related to growth, including AI and cloud expansion" as key reasons to increase the development.
Melanie Nakagawa, Sustainability Director at Microsoft, said in a statement that the company remains committed to its environmental goals, but achieving them "requires a continued effort to review and perfect our focus as markets mature, political environments evolve and innovative emerging solutions emerge."
"At times we can make adjustments to our focus towards our sustainability goals," she added. "Any adjustment is part of our disciplined approach, not a change in our long-term ambitions," she added.
