Micro review: 'The Mughal High Noon: The Ascent of Aurangzeb' by Srinivas Rao Adige

Highlights

Former IAS officer-turned-author Srinivas Rao Adige's debut novel 'The Mughal High Noon: The Ascent of Aurangzeb' was published in 2015. As the title suggests, the book chronicles how Aurangzeb, emperor Shah Jahan's third son, became the next ruler of the Mughal empire.

Set in mid-17th century, 'The Mughal High Noon' begins at a time when the then Mughal emperor Shah Jahan was quite unwell. While news of Shah Jahan's poor health and his treatment are kept under wraps, rumours have started floating whether he is still alive? Meanwhile, Shah Jahan's four sons-- Dara Shukoh, Shuja, Aurangzeb and Murad-- are struggling for power among themselves. Though Dara is the heir apparent, he is considered to be too sensitive and indecisive. On the other hand, Shuja is considered to be too impulsive; and Murad has a reputation for being over indulgent. This sets the stage for Aurangzeb-- who is not only power-hungry, but also clever enough to plan his accession to the throne and how!

This historical fiction will take the readers on a thrilling journey of treachery, rebellion, war, and power struggle. The multiple point of views add value to the story and makes it an interesting read. And for those who would like to know more about this period, the author has also written a book on Dara Shukoh titled 'Misfortune's Favourite' which tells the story from Dara's point of view.
