Michael Owen pinpoints what could cost Newcastle dearly this season

Newcastle United's 'inconsistency' could cost them dearly this season.

That is the verdict of former Magpies forward Michael Owen who believes a mid-table finish should be the limit of his former side's ambition this term.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has received criticism for some of his side's performances this term and have won three, drawn two and lost three of their league games.

That inconsistency currently leaves the Magpies in 13th place in the Premier League table, eight points clear of the relegation zone, and that is about the level Owen expects them to maintain across the course of the season.

"Newcastle appear very inconsistent just now," Owen told Bet Victor.

“I was covering their game against Southampton and it was clear that they couldn’t get into any rhythm.

“It will be interesting to see if Callum Wilson can shake-off the hamstring injury that he picked up in that game.

“He’s been excellent in front of goal for the Magpies, so far.

“I think in terms of the whole season, Newcastle should be fine, but their inconsistency could cost Newcastle dearly over the course of a season and as I can only see them finishing around mid-table."

Newcastle welcome in-form Chelsea to St James' Park and Owen feels United will fall to a 2-1 defeat.

“I originally said I fancied Chelsea to finish third, however, I think that the points total will be lower this year, and that could bring the Blues right into the title mix," Owen added.

"If they are to achieve that, then they will have to take maximum points from matches such as this.

“With Timo Werner in such good form, I think he could be among the goals in a Chelsea victory."
