Michael Owen believes Liverpool 'got away' with one in Tottenham win

Tim Sherwood believes Tottenham Hotspur unfairly missed out on a penalty in their home defeat to Liverpool after Trent Alexander-Arnold nudged Ryan Sessegnon in the box during the first half. While Michael Owen admits his former club's may have 'got away with it'.

Tottenham's players hounded Andy Madley once Sessegnon hit the ground but the referee, and VAR, was having none of it and no spot-kick was awarded.

Owen wasn't so sure whether there was enough contact for a penalty to be given as the Reds beat Spurs 2-1 in North London.

But Sherwood was adamant Antonio Conte's side should have been given a spot-kick.

“It’s a push. For me that’s a push. Anywhere else on the pitch, that’s a penalty,” former Spurs boss Sherwood told Optus Sport.

Owen was split as to whether Alexander-Arnold should have been penalised or not with his slight nudge on Sessegnon as the Tottenham man went to ground softly.

“There’s no question there’s a little shove,” Owen said. “Whether it’s enough to give a penalty… you’re right on the threshold in my opinion. As it is, it’s sort of 50-50 and Liverpool sort of get away with it.”
