Hollywood star Michael Fassbender is described as being 'okay' after being involved in a scary looking crash on his competitive racing debut.
The X-Men star has long been known as a petrolhead to the extent that he has parked acting in order to focus on fulfilling his ambition to be a race driver.
But his debut with Proton Competition turned out to be the stuff of nightmares rather than dreams as his car span out of control and smashed into a wall during a qualifying lap for 24 hours of Le Mans.
Thankfully, he is reported to be uninjured after the serious looking collision and was able to drive his Porsche 911 RSR back to the pit before being evaluated.
He had recorded a fastest lap time of 4:05.296 ahead of Saturday's main race.
In 2019, the Kerry native spoke about his lifelong desire to one day compete in motorsport - specifically in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race
He said: "I've just always felt drawn to going fast into a corner—and fast out—and just naturally felt connected to it.
"And now I want to go to the ultimate place.
"I think it's the history of the place. I think it's the drivers that crashed there, or competed there, or won there. To be a part of that would be, you know, unbelievable."
Unlike typical motor races where the winner is determined by first-past-the-post, the 24-Hours of Le Mans awards a win to the car that covers the greatest distance in 24 hours.
