Michael Duffy's switch to Republic of Ireland finally gets green light

Former Northern Ireland youth international Michael Duffy's switch to the Republic of Ireland has been confirmed.

The Dundalk winger's eligibility for the Republic has been cleared by FIFA, according to reports.

Duffy has featured at underage level for Northern Ireland, and was called up to the senior squad on three occasions without making an appearance.

The 26-year-old has been on the Republic of Ireland's radar for over two years, having previously been a target of former boss Martin O'Neill.

Last November, current Republic boss Stephen Kenny had voiced his frustration at the delay in Duffy's eligibility being cleared.

“I would have called up Michael Duffy from Dundalk as well except that there’s an issue with his paperwork at Fifa." Kenny said at the time.

"But for that he would have been called up.”

Duffy started eight Europa League games for Dundalk last season, featuring in two games against Arsenal.
