Michael D'Angelo's Journey Through Digital Forensics, Cybersecurity, and the Pursuit of Organizational Resilience

As organizations accelerate their adoption of digital technologies, conversations about growth increasingly intersect with conversations about risk. Cybersecurity, once viewed primarily as a technical concern, has become a business issue that affects companies of every size. For Michael D'Angelo, digital forensic expert, that shift reflects a reality he has spent nearly two decades observing from the front lines of digital investigations.

D'Angelo has worked in digital forensics and cybersecurity for approximately 17 years, building experience across government, law enforcement, and private-sector environments. According to him, his career began unexpectedly when a federal government program recruited him during college and directed his studies toward computer-focused forensic work. What started as an alternative path to traditional forensic science eventually became a career centered on investigating complex technology-related incidents and helping organizations understand what happened when processes or security controls failed.

Over the years, D'Angelo has led forensic investigations, supported legal proceedings, and served as a technical expert witness. He notes that his work has spanned a wide range of matters involving technology, from data breaches and intellectual property disputes to internal investigations and litigation support.

That experience now informs his leadership as a leading digital forensic expert, with many years of experience consulting and investigating for major businesses across the U.S. D'Angelo specializes in litigation support, policy development, and advisory services.

"The combination of law enforcement and private-sector experience gives me a perspective that helps in many different situations," D'Angelo says. "Every environment approaches risk differently, and understanding those perspectives allows me to help organizations make practical decisions."

From D'Angelo's perspective, one of the most significant changes in recent years has been the expansion of cyber risk beyond large enterprises. He explains that smaller organizations are increasingly facing many of the same challenges that were once associated primarily with larger companies. "As technology becomes more integrated into everyday business operations, digital resilience has become relevant across industries and organizational sizes," he says.

Industry research reflects that growing concern. According to a report, the global average cost of a data breach reached $4.4 million, highlighting the financial impact that cyber incidents can create for organizations. While individual circumstances vary, D'Angelo believes the broader lesson is that preparation matters long before an incident occurs.

His current focus increasingly centers on advisory work. Rather than becoming involved only after a problem emerges, D'Angelo works with organizations to establish policies, strengthen governance practices, develop response frameworks, and improve operational readiness. According to him, effective cybersecurity planning often extends beyond technology itself and requires collaboration among legal, human resources, information technology, and executive leadership teams.

"Organizations grow more effectively when their infrastructure, policies, and processes are prepared to support that growth," D'Angelo says. "Security and governance become part of the foundation that allows businesses to move forward with confidence."

That advisory approach is particularly relevant in regulated industries. D'Angelo notes that organizations operating in various sectors often face requirements involving data protection, storage, governance, and auditing. His role frequently involves helping leadership teams understand those obligations and develop practical frameworks that align with their operational goals.

Artificial intelligence has added another layer to that conversation. According to D'Angelo, AI has accelerated both defensive and investigative capabilities while also creating new considerations for organizations seeking to manage risk. He explains that the technology can help analysts process large volumes of information more efficiently, while simultaneously expanding the range of tactics available to threat actors.

Throughout his career, D'Angelo has remained committed to translating technical concepts into language that business leaders can understand and act upon. He believes that communication is often as important as technical expertise when helping organizations navigate complex decisions.

"I want organizations to see me as a trusted partner," D'Angelo says. "Whether they are responding to an investigation, building stronger security practices, or preparing for future growth, the goal is to help them make informed decisions and move forward with confidence."
