Michael Conlan moves closer to world title shot with stoppage win over Sofiane Takoucht

Former world champion Andy Lee described it as a "punch-perfect" performance as Michael Conlan stopped Sofiane Takoucht in the final round of their clash in East London this evening.

Belfast man Conlan improved his perfect professional record to 14 victories without defeat and moved ever closer to a world title shot.

Former European champion Takoucht is an experienced operator but Conlan was on the front foot from the opening bell and enjoyed great success to the body of the Frenchman.

But it was that shot veered below the belt on occasions that had Conlan in trouble with the referee who docked him two points for low blows in the middle rounds.

And while that did seem to disrupt Conlan's rhythm slightly, he finished much the stronger and a stinging left hook to the body saw Takoucht crumble in the final round.

Conlan kept the pressure on and a barrage of accurate shots saw the referee stop the contest in the tenth in an impressive display for the former Olympian who was much the slicker boxer throughout.

He said after the fight: “I didn’t mean to throw the low blows, but I just love to hit them in the sweet spot and there’s a fine line. It is hard to adjust mid-feet, and a lot of the shots must have swayed low.

"I am happy with the win, though. I don’t have a clue what happens next. I leave it to my team. But I will be ready.

"I did what I said I would do. I said I would break him down and take him out. It might have been the last round but I did it.”
