Michael Carrick has delivered an update on Mason Mount ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa this weekend.

Mount being out injured has denied Carrick the opportunity to freshen up his midfield in recent weeks.

Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro has been the preferred midfield trio since Carrick was appointed as head coach back in January, yielding some positive results along the way.

Carrick will be keen to have Mount back available though as United have some big games on the horizon in their bid to seal a top-four Premier League finish, thus qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

The former Chelsea midfielder has not featured in a Man United matchday squad since the 3-2 win over Arsenal on January 25 as he picked up an injury during training the following week.

Man Utd are next in action on Sunday as they welcome fellow top-four rivals Aston Villa to Old Trafford and Carrick has revealed the latest on the midfielder.

Speaking on Friday, the Man United boss said: “Mason’s back with the group, which is fantastic.

“He’s an important player for us, Mason, and to have him back and involved is a good step for us, definitely.

“He’s not, you know, 100 per cent in terms of [being] back because he’s only trained a very small amount of time, but he’s back and that’s good for us.

“So, we’ll see if he’s involved or not on Sunday, but yeah, it’s a big step for him, but we’re happy with that.

“Yeah, that’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”

In an additional boost, Noussair Mazraoui trained this week despite coming off with a knock during the 2-1 loss against Newcastle in United’s last outing just over a week ago.

However, Lisandro Martinez remains sidelined along with long-term absentees Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt.
